When GNM and I visited the Brooklyn Trading Post, I stumbled across one of the pistols on my “I really really want this” list.
During our conversation with the owner, I mentioned that I was interested in purchasing a Mauser C96 Broomhandle. He got quiet, and asked whether I cared about the caliber. I didn’t, and he disappeared into the back for a few minutes.

Upon his return, he placed a wonderful example – matching serial numbers, clean, worn enough to show it had been used, but not abused. I’m pretty certain there are some new parts in it, and it’s possible that it’s been re-blued at some point, but overall, it was a lovely piece.
I have no interest in Safe Queens – I want something I can take out and shoot, not something that you handle with cotton gloves, show your friends, and talk about how it will appreciate in value over time.
He offered me a generous price, and if it hadn’t been for other more pressing priorities, I would have bought it on the spot. If it’s still there this weekend, I may not be able to resist….
